Thyroid diseases are controlled biologically, but environmental toxins, stress and nutrition play an important role. There are some foods that exacerbate thyroid disorders as part of their treatment. Some of them will surprise you, mainly because we consider this the last food.

1. Fast food

The thyroid gland utilizes iodine to excrete hormones T4 and T3 from our food. In fact, the only organ that uses iodine is the thyroid. There are many reasons for avoiding fast food, but as far as thyroid disease is concerned, this food has a lot of salt but little iodine.

2. Food processes.

Like fast food, processed and packaged foods also contain a ton of sodium, but rarely use iodized salt. If you don’t believe us, check the labels in the store. Many of these products, including sweets, contain more than 20% of your daily sodium intake in one serving.

A diet that contains too much sodium carries an increased risk of heart disease and high blood pressure. When you consume sodium from processed foods, little or no critical iodine is added. That is why it is always better to prepare fresh meals at home and salt them with iodized table salt.

3. Wheat

Celiac disease is a disorder in which the body can’t handle gluten in grains such as wheat, rye and barley. For some reason, people with celiac disease also have an increased risk of thyroid disease. If you have been diagnosed with celiac disease, avoiding gluten is important for many reasons. Not only does it help with healthy digestion, but it also reduces the risk of thyroid disease.

However, if you don’t have celiac disease or any of the risk factors, avoiding bread may not be advisable. Most varieties should now be made with iodized salt. Be sure to follow the whole grain versions.

4. Soy

There is some controversy over soy. Once considered a healthy substitute for meat products, it has been shown in recent years that soy has a negative effect on thyroid function. Soy can affect your thyroid’s ability to absorb iodine. If you already have a deficiency, this can significantly increase your risk of underactive thyroid.

However, many researchers say that you are not at a higher risk of developing hypothyroidism unless you eat a ton of soybeans or have an existing iodine deficiency. Moderation is essential when it comes to soy, especially if you are a man because soy can also mimic estrogen in the body.

5. Organ meat

Organ meat such as liver, kidneys, and heart has gone out of fashion in recent years, but it may be good for you. These less popular cuts of meat contain a lot of lipoic acids, which is known to reduce inflammation and support cognitive functions.

Unfortunately, lipoic acid can also affect your thyroid function if you get too much. Lipoic acid is also not recommended for people who are already taking thyroid medication, as this can affect the way the medication works.

6. Cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale and cabbage are very healthy because they contain a lot of fiber as well as important vitamins and minerals. Cruciferous vegetables are unique because they contain sulfur-containing compounds known as glucosinolates. Research has shown that glucosinolates have the potential to fight cancer.

However, if you have iodine deficiency, it is better to avoid cruciferous vegetables. The digestive process for this particular product category is believed to block the ability of the thyroid to use iodine.

7. Sugary treats

Processed sugar is the state’s number one enemy when it comes to health. Many of us eat too much without even noticing it. Sugar not only causes weight gain, but it also ignites inflammation throughout the body and increases the risk of problems such as heart disease, diabetes and tooth decay.

Thyroid slows down your metabolism and this can result in gaining weight even if you don’t consume a lot of sugar. But if so, you can take a surprising amount of extra pounds in a short amount of time. Reducing the amount of sugar, you consume is the most important thing you can do to improve your health and reduce the harmful effects of thyroid disease.
